Come join Culture for the Non-Cultured , a large social group, for a guided tour of "American Identities: A New Look," a long-term installation at the Brooklyn Museum.  After the guided tour, we'll do a self-guided exploration of the museum for another hour, and then meet up again for eatin', drinkin' and merry-makin'.  See below for a brief description of the featured exhibit; for a complete description, please see the description on the Brooklyn Museum's website .

"American Identities: A New Look" gives an overview of the past 300 years of American life through its art, including fine and decorative arts (silver, furniture, ceramics, and textiles).  The exhibit has a lot of variety, including art that is local to Brooklyn and the Museum's important holdings of Native American and Spanish colonial art.  It is organized according to a set of eight themes, which show both day-to-day life of Americans and historical movements.  The themes are:

From Colony to Nation
A Nation Divided: The Civil War Era
The Centennial Era, 1876–1900: Tradition and Innovation
Everyday Life
Expanding Horizons
Inventing American Landscape
Making Art
Modern Life

Featured within these sections are American masterworks for which the Museum's collections have long been known, by such artists and makers as John Singleton Copley, Thomas Cole, Albert Bierstadt, Herter Brothers, Union Porcelain Works, Thomas Eakins, John Singer Sargent, Augustus Saint-Gaudens, Frank Lloyd Wright, Marsden Hartley, Georgia O'Keeffe, William Edmondson, David Smith, Richard Diebenkorn, and Robert Colescott.

Culture for the Non-Cultured

Do you live in New York City -- with tons of culture right in your own backyard -- but see Superman Returns and other blockbusters, stuff you could see anywhere? Culture for the Non-Cultured participates in 2-3 cultural activities per month -- including theater, art galleries, museums, walking tours, aquariums, and historical homes. Each event brings in 20-60 people. Usually, we eat afterwards ... because nothing builds community like sitting around a table full of calories! **It is policy that there are no refunds for events, unless they are postponed or cancelled, so make sure you can come to the event before you pay ...**
